The terminally ill Béla Bartók experienced his voluntary exile in the USA like an uprooted plant – until the conductor Serge Koussewitzky awakened the composer’s spirits in 1943 with a commission for the Boston Symphony Orchestra: the concerto for orchestra was to become his most popular work, a showpiece full dazzling blaze of color for all groups of instruments.
