With his symphony no.9, Antonín Dvořák achieved what is called a great success: an orchestral work of the highest perfection, dearly loved by the public since its premiere in 1893. The Largo, with the plaintive cor anglais solo, is one of the most poignant slow symphonic movements in the Romantic repertoire. In the concert film, it also sounds “From the New World” in that the Taiwanese-American conductor Mei-Ann Chen, who has been living in the USA since 1989, is conducting the Tonkunstler-Orchestra.
